Making My Own Gunne Sax!

From some time Andrea and I have been talking abut making clothes. WE started gathering lace and calico printed fabrics and a few other materials little by little and this weekend I was finally brave enough to start making a dress and learning to sew as I go.

Our first idea was obviously to make a Prairie dress from a Gunne Sax Pattern so Andrea got this one on Etsy from Raegirl sadly her shop is on vacation right no but you can find many patterns in other active shops.

I got a beautiful calico print fabric at Joann's for a really good deal so I bought 5 yards and I have some left over for a dress for my niece Matilda!
Here Is when I laid down the pattern on the fabric.
I read the pattern instructions like 3 times before starting.

I cut all the pieces and made a mess, I will remember next time to leave them pinned in the fabric and set them in an organized fashion so I can save myself some time looking trough all this mess!

The corseted front and lace and ribbon details were very intimidating so I tried to be really patient and not get ahead of myself [which is super hard I couldn't wait to be able to wear this dress!]

This is when things get exited! Every time I pinned the dress to Roberta [My mannequin] I got so happy, I think Paul was tired of me saying "Look it is so cute"

I worked all day fro noon until the end of daylight, because I don't have a lamp in my living room. and I kept repeating to myself all the things that needed to get done the next day until I fell asleep.

This is what my dress looked like this morning.

I was able to finally try it on pinned this noon.
I still need to finish the sleeves and the skirt, and put the zipper on.
I will have pictures of the finished dress coming soon on the next post and maybe a few previews of my next project! [We are thinking about taking an extended version of The Mad men challenge]
P.S. Sorry about all the Mess!
P.S.II This was my firs time but next time I work on a dress from a Gunne Sax pattern I will put up a tutorial.

Falling in Love with Vintage, and A Few Folk Singers, a Brief Tale

Part I. My sister Andrea and I were always attracted to the past, we used to make up stories since a very young age in which we were witches living in the past that we wore big romantic Victorian, Rococo, and Colonial Westerm gowns and corseted dresses etc...
Years after the stories had stopped I found a beautiful skirt at a thrift store. It was high-waisted with a blue calico print, tea length, with white lace, ribbon and a corseted waist. Sometime later I was wearing my skirt while I bought some beads at a store, and an older lady with long gray flowy hair  told me she used to wear skirts like that when she was my age... This lovely skirt now belongs to my friend and Gunne Sax Lover Alicia.

Part II. In the summer of '08 at an Arts Summer program in LA a friend of mine named Sarah; who now lives in Denmark and I miss dearly; gave me a CD with a playlist of her favorite music, among them there was one song I could not stop listening to; no matter how much my family complained about the winy infantile voice of the singer. The song was Peach plum pear by Joanna Newsom; whom I then looked up eventually and saw wearing some dresses very similar to my skirt! Now she is in my top favorites, and I had the pleasure of seeing her live at the Oakland Fox theater for her latest Album's tour; in which angelical vocalist from the Fleet Foxes Robin Pecknold opened up for her.

When I  researched the label a new world opened up for me and my sister, the world of vintage clothes. In this world we could get everything we wanted from clothes, non-corporate conscious consumerism, re-using and up-cycling of old materials and garments, nostalgic iconic styles from the past, and much more unique clothes.

Pt. III Joanna Newsom is not the only one of my favorite artists that wears vintage clothes though. Not only do they have peculiar beautiful looks, amazing voices, introspective and nostalgic lyrics, but they also have a wonderful taste on fashion. They tend to dress similarly when they play live shows, always with a bohemian feel, the more videos I see the more I fall in love with their style. Klara [youngest] seems to be wearing a Gunne Sax Victorian Revival dress and Joanna a circa 1910's Gown on their Music video of  Ghost Town.

Our dreams of wearing beautiful dresses that accommodate a bit more to this era came true... Maybe someday Bigna will get to dress amazing folk singers in our boutique's items!

Manual Dexterity

While on the road to achieve a decent ability to the concept of manual dexterity I procrastinate between projects by making my own.
Here are some mixed media designs; on prismacolors and gouache paint. Gouache paint [an opaque watercolor] was extremely difficult to work with at first but now that I can get the consistency down [like that of whole milk] I love the velvety appearance of the darker tones on the museum board.
Maybe I will pot some up on the shop eventually when I make stuff worthy of selling.

"I can't seem to embrace the thought of infinite."

"Climbing those Boulders"

The Universe

Hot Air Baloon

My actual project half way done.

Records

Recently everyone at the apartment we've gathered the best collection of Records I could imagine.
Here are some of the songs that I tend to overplay tirelessly; the ones we unconsciously hum in the morning while getting ready and while cooking or doing homework, the ones we've danced to crazy in the living-room, or cried to for no reason to at night.

Canned Heat  "On the road again"

Credence Clearwater Revival "Heard it Trough the Grapevine"

The Moody Blues "Its' Up to You"

Paul McCartney "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey"

Joni Mitchel "Cactus Tree"
[this album is warped :[ so hopefully I find it someday soon because the songs skip and it is one of my favorites]
